Hamzanwadi University Mathematics Education Students Hold Ethnomathematics Field Lecture at Historic Bayan Mosque and Gumantar Traditional House

North Lombok — Students of the Mathematics Education Study Program at Hamzanwadi University conducted a Field Lecture on Ethnomathematics and Contextual Learning at two significant cultural sites in North Lombok Regency: the Bayan Old Mosque and the Gumantar Traditional House (Bale Adat Gumantar).
This activity is part of the implementation of experiential learning that connects mathematical concepts with local culture.

During the activity, the students explored geometric shapes, symmetry patterns, and concepts of length and area measurement found in the traditional architecture of the mosque and the traditional house. They also conducted interviews with local cultural figures to uncover the philosophical values behind the buildings and cultural practices related to the logic and mathematical thinking structure of the local community.

Dr. Sri Supiyati, M.Pd.Si., Coordinator of the Mathematics Education Study Program at Hamzanwadi University, stated that the activity aims to broaden students' perspectives on the importance of contextualizing mathematics learning.

“Through this field lecture, students not only learn mathematics as an exact science but also see how mathematics lives and is embedded in the culture of the community. The Bayan Old Mosque and Gumantar Traditional House offer a rich learning environment filled with elements of ethnomathematics. This aligns with our vision of producing creative, adaptive mathematics teachers who can integrate local values into their teaching,” she said.

The activity also received full support from local community leaders and cultural site managers. The students are expected to develop contextual teaching materials based on ethnomathematics as a follow-up to this program.

Through this approach, the Mathematics Education Study Program at Hamzanwadi University continues to promote innovative learning aligned with cultural contexts, in line with the Merdeka Curriculum and the spirit of preserving local wisdom in education.
